Why This Meal? A Cultural Journey Through Food

Our menu is more than just food—it’s a bridge to history, resilience, and healing.

• Gumbo – A dish born from the blending of West African, Indigenous, and European influences, symbolizing unity and survival in the African diaspora. It represents how different communities can come together to create something strong and nourishing.

• Rice – A staple food cultivated by African farmers in the Americas, representing the knowledge and labor that shaped agricultural economies in the Western world.

• Honey Cornbread – A beloved dish rooted in Indigenous and African American traditions, once a survival food, now a symbol of warmth and hospitality.

These dishes tell a story of migration, adaptation, and resilience, making them the perfect meal to foster deep discussions on healing and mental well-being.

Discussion Theme: Healing from Post-Traumatic Slave Disorder (PTSD)

• We will present and discuss this video on PTSD to explore how historical trauma continues to impact mental health in Black communities and beyond.

• Guided conversation on how we can foster greater tolerance, understanding, and collective healing.

• Open to all communities – This is a space for learning, dialogue, and shared humanity.
